Disappointing, smelly room

I was in Paris with my wife for a romantic stay and we chose this place based on the great reviews which emphasized cleanliness. We are not snobbish people and will happily stay in tiny rooms with basic amenities as long as they are clean and the hotel service is good. Unfortunately I was extremely disappointed by this hotel. The hallways smelled like vinegar or ketchup, the room itself was dingy and had various marks/stains on the walls and the furniture looked extremely used. Worst of all the room smelled very strongly of dirty socks. It appeared to be coming from the carpet. Combined with the stains and marks all along the walls we decided to just eat the loss and book a much nicer, unfortunately more expensive hotel, nearby. Front desk gentleman was friendly upon check-in but suggested that we leave our room keys at the front desk whenever we left the hotel? I believe this was suggested for safety and security, but I have traveled all over the world and stayed at dozens of hotels, not once has this ever been suggested and I found this extremely odd. It appears others have stayed at this hotel and been happy, but we had an awful time and found the cleanliness to be among the worst of the many hotels we've stayed at.

Hotel Excelsior is very good value for money. The staff is very cordial and the location is most excellent: Gallerie Lafayette is just next door; the Metro Station Opera is just a block away, making it is very easy to get to any part of the city quickly. We will be back!

It couldn't have been better. The reception was keen and on their toes, they took care of everything while being friendly, heartwarming and polite. The breakfast was plenty and service at the bar and lobby almost instantly. Perfect.

Very Nice Hotel in an Excellent Central Location at a Very Reasonable Price

Paris is an expensive city, so it was a bonus to find a very nice hotel at a good price in a good location with a Metro station just a few minutes walk away. The reception staff were very friendly and the room had everything we needed. The in room coffee facilities were generously refilled every day. The beds were comfortable and it was very quiet overnight. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

This was a nice hotel in a reasonably central location. You could walk to most major sites if you were happy to walk a couple of Kms, otherwise, lots of public transport options. Our stay was comfortable. We unfortunately didn’t find the service particularly helpful- particularly regarding getting to the airport and laundry options. All in all, a solid stay and a good option in Paris.
